Innovative UMP produces Anti-Hysteria Kit

Putrajaya,30 April-Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), a university that focuses on the fields of engineering, science and technology, continues to give the liberty for its lecturers and researchers to work on projects and conduct academic studies with high impact to the university as well as the society.
One of the projects, an anti-hysteria kit was launched on April 30, 2015. It was a product culminated from studies on hysteria and trance, carried out by UMP researchers led by Centre of Modern Languages & Human Sciences (CMLHS) lecturer, Dr. Mahyuddin Ismail. He is also the director of Islamic and Human Development Centre (PIMPIN).
The study was funded using the university’s research grant and pre-commercialisation grant. It had successfully produced an anti-hysteria kit that could be used by the public. It was an extension to the methods used by Al-Manarah Treatment Centre to treat people for trances and hysteria.
UMP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr. Daing Nasir Ibrahim said, a detailed and comprehensive study was carried out based on the subject and scientific method.
“In fact, every research finding needed to have tangible features and was evidence-based,” he added.
“The anti-hysteria kit developed is a product with big commercial potentials as the status is shariah-compliant. It is free from any metaphysical matters, superstition or irrational belief.
“UMP management has full confidence with the research team’s expertise and the support given by the Ministry of Education and related parties. The question behind the problem of hysteria and trance needs to be explored in a scientific manner in a bid to find the solution.
“The society needs to be enlightened based on actual data in solving cases related to hysteria and trance as reported in the media, that often happen in institutions of higher learning,” he said.
Dato’ Dr Daing Nasir said, besides the fear among community members of such events, it also had effects on the emotional, social relations, productivity, academic performance of the patients who at times, would also affect their faith and the shariah.
Based on this achievement and study on the laws of witchcraft (sihir) that was also led by Dr. Mahyuddin Ismail, UMP was looking into the possibility of setting up an Islamic Treatment Centre with the purpose of further developing academic and scientific studies in the area.
The launching of the kit was held in conjunction with the official opening of a seminar, ‘Tackling Hysteria as Easy as ABC’ by Malaysia Education Director, Raihana Khudri who read the speech of the ministry’s Higher Education Department, Director General Professor, Dato’ Dr. Asma Ismail. The event was held at the ministry’s Zaaba Hall in Putrajaya.
Also present were PBMSK Dean, Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Nubli Abdul Wahab and Department of Research and Innovation Head of Deputy Registrar Datin Fazia Ali.

Some 100 participants took part in the seminar comprising lecturers, school teachers, counsellors and psychology officers. They shared their experience in tackling hysteria and listened to a talk presented by Malaysia Bina Budi Welfare Association president Tuan Guru Haji Jahid Sidek.
